Going on a bike ride

A few years ago Waldo bought a really nice bike and he loved riding whenever he could, but since I had no bike and no desire to join him his pleasure rides were few and far between. Then a few weeks ago something changed in me and I decided that going on bike rides would be great family time and a great way to get some much needed exercise into our lives. We looked around at Target and Walmart for bikes and trailers and while they have a wide selection with a range of prices, we decided to spend a little more money and buy from a locally owned bike store. We are so happy that we did. We got a really good deal and I love helping out a local business. We bought my bike, Lily’s trailer and a helmet for Lil and got some maintenance done on Waldo’s bike from the shop, the owner did a little jig as we walked out.

My bike

Before we hooked it up we let Lily sit in the trailer in the living room and since the trailer can be used as a stroller I took her for a little walk around the block so that she’d be comfortable in it.

We know better then to just throw Lily into something big and new and call it good. She needs time to adjust and get to know something first. Once she was okay with it we hooked the trailer to Waldo’s bike and let Lily watch him go for a ride out in front of the house. She thought this was great.

Our new bike trailer

I hadn’t ridden a bike in at least 20 years so I was very scared to get on my bike for the first time, but the old saying is right on, you never forget how to ride a bike. What the saying fails to mention is the balance takes a little practice to get back. The first time I braved my bike I felt so shaky I was shocked that I was staying upright. After a short ride I returned to the house and Waldo (with Lily in the trailer) followed me around the block and the following conversation ensued:
Waldo “see, you are already much less shaky”
me “oh you could see that”
W “you looked like you had Parkinson’s.”  I laughed so hard I nearly fell off my bike.

I am much more comfortable at this point and weather permitting we go on a ride just about every night after dinner. It has been wonderful and the best part is that Lily will tell us at some point during the day “we go on a bike ride together later”. The “together” part is my favorite.

On being back home again

We have been back in California for almost 10 months now. It is much the same and totally different than I expected it to be.

  • There is family drama, I try to stay out of it. Unfortunately it’s much easier to stay out of it when you live 1300 miles away. Don’t get me wrong, I manage to stay mostly out of it, but occasionally I get right in the thick of it. Oh how I hate that. I swear if you leave me alone, I’ll leave you alone.
  • The summer was brutally hot and I totally expected that. I did not however expect that I mostly wouldn’t care. I work (about two hours a day) at home so I really don’t have to leave the house too often. It’s air conditioned in the house and all the stores, so when you do have to go out, I’m only dying during the walk between the two. The evenings are normally wonderfully cool and lovely to be outside in. 105 days are nothing to love, however neither are winter highs of 1 for months. The weather really does have a trade off. The summer was hot but the winter is so mild and short. I think our coldest day was probably 25. That is laughable when you’ve spent the last 14 winters in NorthWest Montana. We wore light coats most days and occasionally just a t-shirt. People looked at me like I was crazy, but I simply wasn’t cold. In early February we were able to play outside in just a light outer layer on Lil and there were flowers already blooming. That doesn’t exist in Montana till about April or so.
  • Lily loves my Mother-in-law and Father-in-law. I expected this, but not just how much she loves them. She happily hung out with them last Monday for about 5 hours while Waldo and I slept due to the flu. She is still shy and withheld with everyone else, but she is totally open and herself with them. She doesn’t see my Dad, or Mom or grandparents, etc often enough to be that comfortable just yet. See the paragraph below. Lil is getting more comfortable around Mark’s sister and brother and my sister Jolene. I don’t know if it’s because they have little kids so they are more parentlike and less scary or some other unknowable reason, but she’s not there yet with either of my parents or grandparents. This doesn’t really surprise me because Lily’s been shy since day 1, but I thought she’d have opened up a little more by now.
  • It’s a lot harder to visit family then I expected it to be. I figured I’d be visiting my two favorite cousins and sister weekly and I assumed that I’d be at my Grandparents and parents houses often, probably a couple of times a month or so. I am lucky if I visit a Grandparent or parents once a month, I see my sister every couple of months, sometimes a little more often. I have only seen my cousins a handful of times since I got here. My Grandma (Memaw) has a habit of calling me once a month or so to see if I moved back to Montana. I have a life, it’s a nice simple one but I do have responsibilities, my time is limited. And to be completely honest I’m a huge homebody, I avoid leaving the house if I can, but it’s mostly I’m busy. Everyone else has lives and things to do too, so this all equals being hard to visit more often.
  • I didn’t expect the germs in California to be so different from the Montana germs. We have all gotten sick more often since we moved here then we have been in years. It is no fun for Waldo and I and so much worse for Lil. Poor baby girl. I will be so glad when we are totally acclimated.
  • I didn’t expect to still be living with Waldo’s parents, we were hoping to be out in about 3 months. That didn’t happen. What I never could have expected though was that that was fine with me. I mean I’d much rather have our own place in a perfect world but living here isn’t so bad. Lily loves her ReRe and Papa, a lot. We all get along and are easy going people. We help each other out with the cooking and dishes. I made two really good friends. Life could be worse.

I could probably go on and on about the differences between the place I grew up and the place I loved and called home for 14 years. The drivers for one, OMG the drivers! But I won’t go there. I can say that I’m so glad that I moved away and had my own life and adventures for my 20’s. All the things I went through made me who I am today. I am even more glad that I was able to come home again. I am so glad that my daughter has a relationship with our families and they are so lucky to have one with her. Even though the holidays and different here then there, they were great. I loved all the hustle and bustle and can’t wait for Easter to have more of it. All the family and everyone talking over each other and the kids running underfoot. It’s great and I love it.  I guess I did go on, but that’s kind of the point.  Things are different but as long as Waldo, Lily and I are together we are home no matter where we live.

Who ever said you can’t go home again was wrong.

Family Fun

The other day Waldo’s sister Christy (talk about confusing when we are both together) (oh and I have a step-sister named Krisiti, she and I were born on the same day, she’s just a few years older) her husband Barclay and their son Jude visited from L.A. We all went outside to play and enjoy the wonderful weather.

I was sitting on the grass taking it all in and taking pictures.

Lily kept running to me from the ends of the backyard and jumping into my arms for a major hug.

Papa was telling Lily something about the garden or grass. She is going to have so much fun helping him garden this year. We already got her some tiny tools.

I took probably 10 or 20 pictures of Lily and my Mother-in-Law Rita and this one was the absolute best. Of course Waldo and my Sis-in-law Christy were photo bombing us.

Lily was ready to go to dinner.

Cool kid

I’m pretty sure she was telling us to hurry up at this point.

We met up with Waldo’s brother and his family at a great local restaurant. I took the rest of the pictures with Waldo’s phone (mine was uncharacteristically just about dead).

We had a nice time and have to enjoy them while they last. Waldo’s brother is moving his family to Idaho as we speak. We’re going to miss all those rowdy boys.

Life doesn’t get better than watching your kid feed a giraffe

A few weeks ago Waldo and I took Lily to the zoo.  The weather had been so nice we had to take advantage of it, and spending time together is always a fun way to spend the day.  Since both of us work from home we are literally together 24/7, you would think that we see enough of each other, but you’d be wrong, we like spending time together.  So we went to the zoo, I knew this story had a point.

We packed up all of our stuff and headed south.  We had a little picnic in the park before we went in to see the ANIMALS.  Lily loves the animals.  We really like going during the off season, because there are so few other people there and it feels like we have the whole place to ourselves.  Well it’s not really that empty, but we usually don’t have to share the exhibits with anyone else.

The Australasian Avery is the fist exhibit that you see and it has these crazy big blue birds. That bird is probably more than half the size of Lily.  They have other birds too, but the blue ones amaze me.

Then it’s on to the ELEPHANTS!

The orangutans are next. The two lady orangutans had babies recently. We didn’t get to see any babies though.

We stopped by and tried to see the tigers, but they were snoozing and kind of hidden. Next we saw the giraffes, then we walked over to the seals and sea lions.

Our zoo is working on building a new seal and sealion cove. I can’t wait for it to be finished.

And the flamingos were next. I love their bright color and majesty.

I can’t remember what this dude is called, but I like his bangs.

We did a few things that we hadn’t done at the zoo before. We let Lily go and visit the petting zoo and she got to feed the giraffe. Both of which were AWESOME and she loved it all.

Daddy had to pet the goat first.

The petting zoo was mostly goats and a few standoffish sheep.

The giraffe feeding took all of two seconds, but Lil really enjoyed it.

She walked around the zoo picking up sticks so she could feed other animals. Of course we didn’t let her actually feed any other animals, but I thought the idea was really sweet.

Lily walks around with her hands in her pockets all the time these days. It is so cute.

We stopped by the little hippo statue so Lil could climb and play.

We of course saw lots of other animals, but didn’t like too many of the pictures.

We have a tradition of stopping by the snack shop and sharing a ice cream cone. It is one of my favorite parts of our zoo trip.

Knocking is like saying Please to the door

Last Sunday door knobs became Lily’s bitch. It came as a shock to all of us. I can’t remember the last time she even tried to open a door and all of the sudden Sunday she got it in her head to stand on her tippy toes and give it a try. She put her hands on each side of the knob and twisted it. After a bunch of hip-hip-horays and yays, she tried it again, and again, and again. She was so proud of herself, as were we.

A little later it was nap time. After I got Lil to sleep and laid down (I still nurse her to sleep) I went out to the kitchen and had lunch with Waldo. While we were cleaning up I took my eyes off of Lily’s video monitor (thanks Stephanie, you were right, I love it and I’m so glad I won) and the next thing we know I hear a commotion coming from the hallway and Lily burst in to the room with a big “Here I am!”. She had opened the bedroom door to came to find us when I didn’t go get her after .5 seconds.

Of course now I have to teach her that she can’t just open the door because wants to go in that room. I have spent a lot of time this week saying “knocking is like saying Please to the door”. I think she’s getting it.

I can’t believe how big this girl is getting.
