Dental Visit

Waldo and I haven’t been to the dentist since right before we left Montana about 17 months ago. We have dental insurance so there’s no excuse other than not knowing a dentist in California and losing track of time. Over the last couple of months we have both commented to each other that we have a tooth pain or two. Waldo’s Mom Rita found a holistic dentists in Boise and she really liked him so we got on the ball and Waldo made appointments for us. I knew that Lily needed to be eased into having a stranger probe around in her mouth so Waldo asked the receptionist if Lily could sit in the exam room while we were getting our cleaning. Of course she could.

In the days leading up to the big dentist day we talked to Lily about what was going to happen and how excited Mommy and Daddy were to be getting our teeth cleaned and how important it is to take care of your teeth. She was starting to get excited. It didn’t hurt that we also told her we’d go to the zoo after the dentist.

When we got to the dentist office the hygienists, Erlinda came out and talk to Lily for a few minutes, just trying to get on Lil’s good side. I thought it was very nice and scored a big gold star for Erlinda. Then Erlinda took Waldo back to do his x-rays and then came to get Lily and myself. We sat in a chair while Waldo got cleaned or stood over him so Lil could see into his mouth. When it was time to polish his teeth Erlisa let Lily feel the polisher and how soft it was, Lily loved this and made sure that Waldo and I got turns touching the spinning polisher.

Lil started to get bored after a while so I let her play on my phone while Waldo got finished up. Because we were still in the exam room I was able to show Lily all the different steps even if she wasn’t into it at that point. The same thing pretty much happened while I was getting my teeth cleaned only she was bored sooner. Erlinda told me I have very cute tiny teeth, and she was very impressed with how straight and perfect they were even though had never had braces. More gold stars.

After I was done Lil sat on my lap and I showed her teeth to Erlinda and then Lil got a tooth brush. she thought that was very cool. While I was getting my stuff together Lily and Waldo went to the front desk to make our six month appointments and also appointment for the work that we need right away. When they got there, the receptionist let Lily get a little toy from the treasure chest for being a good girl. We decided that when we come back for our next cleaning Lily would get more of a “cleaning”, but it will really just take a few minutes and will just be another step in the ease-in plan that we have. I think Lil’s going to do great as long as we go at her pace.

By the time we had lunch and she had a nap we got to the zoo about a hour before it closed. We were a little bummed that we didn’t get to see all of our favorite animals, but we did get our ice cream cone and had a nice time anyway.

Coati!

WARNING!!! Make sure your volume is turned down before you press play.

The last time we went to Zoo Boise as soon as Lily saw the coati she started doing this.

The coati is one of the animal that we had in the zoo in Fresno so she’s really familiar with them. We didn’t even tell her what it was this time, she just remembered. And she was so excited to see him as you can tell.

Random Mobile Shots

Lily loves to draw, I mean she seriously LOVES it.

Drawing

This particular night I was taking a shower and she was hanging out with Waldo in his office. She gets to draw with Daddy’s cool bright highlighters when they hang out in there and it is so exciting for her. She also gets to use Daddy’s work note pads, which is very cool.

The next morning Waldo walked into the family room and showed me how she had colored on all but like 6 pieces of paper on his new pad. I think it’s funny, he finds it a little annoying, but annoying in that Daddy’s Girl can do no wrong kind of way.

I am so proud

We have been dealing with a nasty diaper rash over here. Well it’s not truly a diaper rash, more like a few raised blisters. We cloth diaper and I’m 99% sure that the blisters were a result of using my brother-in-law’s washer when we first moved here. They use normal conventional laundry soap and fabric softeners, you know the things that normal people use, not the stuff that crunchy, cloth diapering, chemical avoiding weirdos use. Because we used their washer for about 2 1/2 weeks the buildup from the laundry soap was pretty bad. Anyway, the point is that I’m working on clearing up this apparently painful “rash” on Lily and part of that is of course trying to strip our diapers, but also trying everything in my natural rash clearing up kit. I’ve tried coconut oil, oatmeal baths, salt water baths, calendula oil, Rescue Cream and a few other things I’m sure. I’ve also tried to have Lil run around diaper-less as often as possible. But she hates being diaper-less and I’m not too fond of it myself. We have gotten those blisters just about cleared up a number of times and then something will happen to set them back again, mostly she will have a poop that I don’t smell and she doesn’t complain about and sits in it for a little too long.

Well yesterday I decided that I was so over these blisters, as is Lil so we I’m making sure she’s commando as often as possible. I moved her little potty chair to the family room where we spend most of our time and reminded Lil that that when she felt her body telling her it was time to go, she could go right there. Back story: She’s used the potty a number of times, just not consistently or very often. We aren’t pushing her to potty train, I want her to do it when she’s ready, but I won’t complain when I don’t have diaper laundry to do anymore either. Back to my point.

I was working at my computer and she was drawing at her easel and I hear “oops”. I remind her that accidents are fine, but that the potty is there when she needs it. A little later, like 30 minutes or so, I hear “oops” again. I go through the whole thing again. After a diapered nap and lunch we go back to the family room and I strip her and remind her of the potty chair.

I’m working at my computer again and she walks up to me and says “I listened to my body”, I get up and tell her to hurry to her potty. She responds with “no I already did, see!” And she had. This happened two more times!!! before bed! The last time, she had to get out of the bath to take care of business.

I don’t know what will happen when we wake up tomorrow, but this was awesome. It was like a little light went off in her head and she put the pieces together. I’m sure we will spend a lot more diaper-less time for the next few days because those blisters looked much better tonight, but not gone yet so hopefully it will help to reinforce using the potty.

Does anyone have any other diaper rash solutions for me to try?

Wordless Wednesday

Well this is going to end up as Mostly wordless.

Visiting with Suzanne and family

One of my best friends from high school came to California to visit this summer and we got together at a park so the kids could play. This was the first time Suzanne and I had seen each other since right after high school graduation. I know that 17 (gulp) years have passed and we both have kids of our own, but I still feel like a kid myself and like we were in school together yesterday.
