Christmas 2010

Since this was our first Christmas back in Cali we had to figure out how to incorporate our love of simple quiet holidays with visiting lots of relatives and I’m pretty happy with how it turned out.

On December 18th we went to a party at my cousin’s house for my Dad’s side of the family.

It was a lot of fun. I spent the days before the party baking 3 different types of cookies and two kinds of rice crispy treats to give out. The cookies turned out great but the royal icing was still wet on the sugar cookies so they didn’t look quite as nice as I had planned.*

It was also really cool because our Mamaw (Grandma, Dad’s Mom) just moved back to town last month after being away for 10 years. Everyone had a lot of fun eating, visiting and wearing silly glasses.

Originally we were going to have Christmas Eve at Waldo’s brother’s house but all of his family came down with the plague the day before so we switched up plans and it worked out great. Except for the sick babies part. Waldo’s brother has 4 boys; 12, 10, 2 1/2 and 1 (I think) and I think all of them were sick. We ended up having a really nice dinner at home with Waldo’s parents and then Lily opened her gifts from them.

I spent the days leading up to Christmas baking cookies and rice crispy treats to give out.*

Waldo made us hot chocolate and his Dad (Papa) started a fire. It was so cozy.

Waldo’s Mom Rita whom Lily calls ReRe made Lily a beautiful quilt and pillow case.

ReRe and Papa got her an easel, paper and markers along with a pack of Little people to go with the house she got a few weeks ago.

Lily always asks that you draw a kitty for her and we do but none of us are very talented. After a lot of drawing and playing we went to bed with hopes of sleeping in the following morning. And what can only be called a Christmas Miracle Lily didn’t wake up until 8 on Christmas morning. YAY.

After getting ready to go Waldo, Lily and I headed over to my Memaw’s (my Mom’s mom) house for chocolate gravy. This is the thing that I have been looking forward to most of all. It is a family tradition to have Memaw’s chocolate gravy for Christmas breakfast and it didn’t disappoint. My Grandparents house was packed to the gills with family, it was very noisy and a lot of fun.

We opened gifts then took a couple of pictures.

Once we were done Waldo, Lily and I left to go visit my Dad. We didn’t get any pictures over there but Lily got a lot of nice clothes and a couple of cute dolls. Then it was home so Lily could nap and then open her gifts from us.

Waldo and I had decided long ago that we don’t really exchange gifts with each other and that we wouldn’t go crazy for our kid(s). We want the holidays to be about family and not stuff. We did pretty good this year. We got Lily 3 little gifts and one slightly bigger thing. Actually one of the smaller gifts was suppose to be for one of the nephews but he already had something very similar only way better so we gave it to Lil instead and I have already gotten rid of it.

Both of Lil’s little gifts (that we bought specifically for her) were see and says. The smaller of the two was her favorite thing ever until she opened her last and best gift.

Christmas 2010

Lily loves Yo Gabba Gabba and we weren’t 100% sure which character she loved the most but she says TooDee’s name pretty often and she looked the cuddliest so we went with her. It was a huge hit.

After opening TooDee she wanted to draw all the Gabba gang. Waldo did his best.

I hope that everyone had a wonderful and memorable Christmas and holiday season.

*I will do a separate post about the cookies.

Random mobile shots

A few months ago it was time to get a new cell phone and after much talking and considering we decided to upgrade to smart phones. Waldo and I each got a htc Incredible. We love them and one of my favorite parts is that it has a pretty darn good camera. I almost always have my phone with me so it’s convent when Lil’s being extra cute to just grab it and snap away.

I’ve seen on a few other blogs where they share their mobile shots and love the idea. So here goes.

Halloween 2010 – Trick or Treat

This is the first Halloween that Lily had any idea what was happening and I was super excited because we live in the same town as a lot of our family now so I was going to get to show my cutie pie off. I mean pictures are good but the real thing is so much better. Lily loved her costume and once she got comfortable with so many people in the room she played and showed off her tutu and wand.

Lily

My Mom’s wife Cory surprised us with the tutu, wings and onesie a month or two ago. When we got it I knew what Lily was going to be for Halloween and it was perfect. I bought the wand and a tiara to finish the fairy princess look off. The tiara wouldn’t stay on her head so we just carried it around. She loved the wand and had a lot of fun waving it about and chewing on the star topper.

Me and my little Fairy

We don’t really give Lily candy or much sugar for that matter so going door to door to trick or treat seemed unnecessary this year. So we went to visit my Dad and Step-Mom before the real trick or treating started. We wanted to be back in our comfy home before all the ghosts and Gaga’s were wondering the streets. We would have visited more people but my Grandparents are in Mississippi visiting my Aunt, my Mom lives about 35 minutes away and the few other family members were either out of town or busy with their own lives. They will all get to see the pictures so they will survive.

Lily and Daddy trick or treating
Daddy taking Lily up to Grandpa’s door. Lily is still shy around my Dad (and everyone else except my in-laws) so she didn’t say trick or treat although we had practiced.

We meet my sister Jolene and her kids at our Dad’s so we could take pictures of the girls together.

Jolene and Livi
Livi had just woke up and was in no mood for pictures at first.

They were both fairies and just looked too cute together.

This is a picture of my lovely little sister Jolene. She hates it so I guess it’s a good thing she doesn’t read my blog. This should teach her. 🙂

My step-niece and nephew were there too.

Brianna
Brianna was a really cute cat.

The kids went outside to play after a while.

I had to bribe Olivia to sit still so I could take a picture of her and Lily together outside. Lily just wanted to go down the slide again, this was the best shot I got.

We had a really nice Halloween and hope that all of you did too.

Halloween 2010 – The Patch

This past Saturday which I guess would be Halloween-Eve we took Lily to this really cool looking Pumpkin Patch. She had a great time walking around and climbing on all the pumpkins. I don’t know what about the big orange pumpkins screamed crawl over me, but Lily sure thought so.

Climbing

They also make great seats.

Lily loved climbing on and sitting on the pumpinks

Lily let us put her on top of the hay wall by a really cute little pumpkin and a scarecrow. I thought it would make a great picture and it sort of did, I think the light is a little off or something. Anyway, she wanted down RIGHT AWAY.

Lily was determined to move the wheelbarrow. I don’t know where she thought it needed to go but she was going to get it there.

I realized a while ago that I’m in very few pictures with Lily so I’m trying to get better about giving the camera to Waldo.

Lily and Me

I got a couple good ones of them, this one is my favorite. And did you notice, more pumpkin sitting?

On the way out Lily need to investigate the hay wall and the pumpkins.

Lily: Hey Mama, I’m pretty sure something great is going on over there.

Me: Oh yeah? What do you think it is Baby Girl?

Going up

L: I’m not sure, but I’m going to use these great orange step stools to find out.

M: Just be careful.

and Up

L: Almost there.

Almost there

L: Just a little further

"hey what's going on over there?"

M: What do you see?

L: Nothing, I’m too short!

Oh hai Mom

*Don’t you love how us blogger Mom’s will let their kid do something semi dangerous to get the good pictures? LOL!

Happy Halloween!

Swim class

A day or two after we told everyone that we were moving back to Cali my sister Jolene texted me to see if we wanted to go to Mommy and me swim lessons with her and Olivia. I almost said yes but my fear of a bathing suit in public stopped me. After a few days thinking about it I texted her back that we’d love too. I decided it wasn’t fair to deny Lily because of my body issues.

The swim lessons are 30 minutes a day Monday through Friday for two weeks. At first I was kind of ticked that I had to schlep all the way across town, grease Lily and myself up and stuff both of us in swim suits for 30 minutes. After the first day I was so glad it was only for 30 minutes and was happy to schlep, grease and stuff for two weeks.

Our class got pushed back a couple of weeks so by the time swim lessons started I was really looking forward to it. It was a great excuse to spend time with my sister and niece and play in the water a little. There were 5 or 6 kids in Lily’s class. Two of which were tiny 10 month old twin girls with some of the cutest bathing suits I had ever seen.

Day 1: (5 minutes late)
float on belly with Mama’s support – Aces

adding kicks to that – Aces

floating on back with Mama’s support – no go, but I get that, I can’t float on my back either.  None of the kids like it.

Blowing bubbles – Aces.  She didn’t blow any actual bubbles but she tried and I’m pretty sure she’s the only kiddo that even tried.

"Mom don't let go"

Day 2: stuff from Day 1 – Aces

Then they told us to do this weird pushing the baby under the water and toward the side – the first time, fine.  The second time – no go in a huge way.

The rest of the class time was spend crying and signing to nurse.  We got out of the pool after a few failed attempts to have fun again.

I got home and started thinking about being a swim class drop out. I didn’t go into this class expecting Lily to be a full fledged swimmer when we were done, I just wanted to have fun with my Girl and my Sister and Niece. This was so not fun.

Day 3:

After lots of thought I decided to give it one more try.  Waldo tagged along to see what it was all about.

Not much fun was had this day.  All the babies were crying, Lily just wanted to nurse.  Disaster.

On the drive home Waldo said he had a lot to say about the swim class and none of it was good.  He also said if I wanted to drop out he would totally back me on it because if it was him he would.

Day 4:

We took the day off from swim class and instead went swimming at my aunt’s house.  It was so nice and relaxing.  I did encourage Lily to blow bubbles, float and kick.  I also tried to get her to jump into the pool which I guess we missed on day 2 after we got out of the pool.    We had a great time and YAY! swimming was fun again.

Day 5:

I still really wanted to give up but Jolene texted me that day 4 had been a lot of fun for Olivia and we should keep coming and just do what we are comfortable with.  Which is exactly what we did.  We went back for the next few days and practiced all the fun floating/kicking/ bubble blowing stuff and by the last day Lily didn’t want to leave.

"Hey look I got it!"

I felt this was a huge success and swim class ended up being exactly what I wanted it to be. I don’t think the instructor liked me much or maybe she was a little intimidated with my Mama Bear impression because of the last day the kids all got certificates except Lily and Olivia.  Jolene asked Monica (instructor) about it and she said she still had to fill them out.  So Jolene went with her and a few minutes later handed me Lily’s.  I read it and laughed.  It said she hadn’t advanced to the next class, Jolene asked Monica why since Olivia did.  Monica said that Lily just wasn’t ready, I totally agree with that, but I think Monica was a little scared to give it to me herself, like I was going to be upset or something.

I’m sure next year’s class will be much more useful, but I’m so glad we did it this year. Lily loves to swim and I feel more comfortable in the water with her.
